Acupuncture
can help boost the immune system and your energy levels. If you’ve been feeling run-down and lethargic due to stress, recurring infections or excessive use of antibiotics all of this contributes to lower our resistance to disease. A regular acupuncture session support and strengthen the immune system and increases the white blood cells in the body to fight the infection.
In recent years there has been much discussion about psychosomatic factors which may cause or increase allergic conditions such as hay fever and asthma. Many allergic reactions may have a fundamentally psychological trigger. An immune response can even be triggered by stressful situations. This process is involuntary and is thought to be a part of the fundamental survival mechanism. Hypnotherapy can be utilised to identify and remove this conditioned response behaviour and help to alleviate the symptom and ease suffering.
Our immune system also is affected, particularly because the lymphatic fluids in our body require movement to move – the lymphatic system has no pump of its own. Deep tissue massage will return circulation to more normal levels; it will keep your body’s lymphatic fluids – essential to your immunity – moving, and will assist in flushing bacteria and viruses out of your system.
Spring and summer is often a time of increased suffering for people with airborne allergy problems, increased levels of pollen and air pollution can cause irritation and congestion of the eyes, nose and sinuses. Cranial Osteopathy can be valuable in easing these symptoms, especially the build-up of sinus congestion. Cranial Osteopathy is a hand on manual therapy using very gentle pressure, massage and movements to release restriction between craniofacial bones and soft tissues. Benefits of this can be improved venous and lymphatic drainage from the sinuses as well as the whole ears, nose and throat region, using this approach avoids the side effects of decongestant medications.
Understanding seasonal allergies –
Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is a hypersensitivity to airborne allergens such as grass and flower pollens which are on the increase this time of the year. When a hypersensitive individual breathes in these allergens it creates an immune response because their immunoglobulin (IgE) antibodies release multiple inflammatory modulators, most notably histamine. Histamine is the chemical compound responsible for the debilitating symptoms of allergies which include;
- Red, itchy and/or watery eyes
- Nasal congestion and excess catarrh
- Sneezing and runny nose
- Sinus headaches
- Wheezing
Sensitivity to allergens and therefore the accompanying symptoms may vary from year to year and season to season. Allergy testing is a helpful approach to determine which allergen may cause the allergic reaction. If possible these can then be avoided in order to minimise symptoms. Please call on 0208 299 9798 for further information or to book an appointment.

Understanding your headaches and treating it naturally
From a little bit of pressure and a minor nuisance to a debilitating throbbing in the head, a headache is something many of us know all too well and some suffer on a regular basis. A symptom with many causes, the nature of pain can vary greatly; from a dull pain behind the eye ball, a sharp pain on one side, to a band of pain across the forehead.
Pain signals may originate from blood vessels in the head and neck, the connective brain tissue or any of the major nerve centres in the brain. Other sources include the scalp, sinuses, teeth, muscles and joints of the neck.
For those who suffer from regular or chronic headaches, the good news is that great medical advances have been made in the treatment of headaches in recent years. That being said, keep in mind that the regular use of medication can also increase the likelihood of recurring headaches which eventually leads to a vicious cycle of more headaches requiring more meds.
So if you find yourself regularly popping pills to overcome a headache you may be pleased to know that there are essential oils and herbal options which could alleviate the pain or symptoms associated with the headache. Many can safely be used alongside conventional medicine.

OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER
Health is the greatest possession. Contentment is the greatest treasure. Confidence is the greatest friend. Lao Tzu
Back Pain – In 2014/15 the working days lost due to work related back disorders was 2,957,000 days with the average. Number of days lost per case of 13.3 days. Days lost per case are significantly lower than the 2001/02 where average days lost was 18.5 days per case. So we are getting better but still, back pain and more commonly, low back pain are still the most commonly presented symptom to GPs.
Top Ten tips to maintain a healthy spine from our Osteopath
- Give up smoking, Remember it is STOPTOBER this month as well
2. Think about your posture, yes it’s back to the 50’s I’m afraid “sit up straight please”. Keep your body weight in equilibrium, not too far forward, not too far back. Roll your pelvis forward to maintain a good “plumb line” whilst standing and sitting. And don’t forget sleeping posture; pillow between the knees lying on your side and under your knees lying on your back. Try not to sleep on your front, or try some pillow hugging if you have to.
3. Limit our time seated and if we are sitting make sure it is not for too long so we lose our natural spinal curves.
4. If you work in an office, lobby your employer to provide a variable height desk to allow you to stand and sit whilst working.
5. If you work from home either buy a sit/stand desk or use an alternative. An ironing board with a box on top makes for a good cheap stand up desk.
6. Maintain good cardiovascular health by exercising and increasing your heart rate to allow your body to get enough blood flow to the important areas of the spine. If you can do some core strength exercises as well then even better.
7. Walk when you can to maintain good functional movement through your spine and maintain good blood flow.
8. Avoid lifting and twisting without bending your legs especially with a weight held away from your body.
9. Try to maintain reasonable body weight for your size
10. Keep hydrated to maintain good fluid dynamics within the spine.
Hypnotherapy Making the decision to quit smoking is a big step and hypnotherapy can help make your goal of quitting become an achievable reality.
Hypnotherapy can help boost your determination to take back the controls of your life and smoking habit. You can look forward to the future as a non-smoker, healthy, happy and burden free. Our Hypnotherapist, Lyndall, will give you a call to answer any questions you may have in advance of booking your session. Each session is tailored to your individual needs and lasts around one and a half hours. On average, most people stop with just one session. Why not try it for yourself, give us a call, and look forward to a renewed YOU as a non-smoker, easily and permanently.
The Mind & Body Clinic (MBC) in association with The Vale Practice
When you think of the words Mind and Body, do you see them as a whole or a separate from one another?
We at MBC see them as intertwined, one complimenting the other. When in balance the Mind & Body functions well. But what happens when something goes wrong mentally? How do our bodies cope?
How often do we pay attention to our aches pains and question when we have an illness what is actually happening within our bodies and what the physical symptoms might be trying to tell us?
There are many paths towards healing; health is a cohesive balance of mind and body.
Our state of mind can greatly impact our moods; subconscious feelings of lethargy can be an early sign of depression. Aches and pains can be due to unresolved emotions.
Life events and chronic emotional stress have been medically connected to a number of physical symptoms. It is only now that the medical profession is beginning to recognize the Mind and Body connection.
What is being communicated? What is our body trying to tell us and how often do we listen?
We at the Mind & Body Clinic are offering individual treatment tailored to your specific physical and emotional needs.
MBC believe that it is by treating the whole individual that balance can be reestablished.
On Thursdays Rebecca from our Osteopathic team offers dynamic sessions including osteopathy & yoga techniques

These sessions will ensure your practicing yoga correctly, stretching safely & breathing more efficiently.

AUGUST 2016 NEWSLETTER
Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability
Summer Holidays….
Holiday time is possibly the most hotly anticipated period in the year – apart from Christmas. But, like Christmas, it takes a certain amount of preparation, both mental and practical, to get the most out of them.
Attitude is a key. Holidays are good times to take stock and give a little room to think about changes you might need to make in your daily life. Whether you go on your own, with a partner or friend, or with your family, make sure you take time to have some space for yourself. Find time to breathe, unwind, move, swim, dance and let go of the normal demands life makes on you. What’s it like just to ‘be’ and not to ‘do’, to respond and not to react. And when you return, maybe think about how you can incorporate more ‘holiday’ time into your everyday life. It could help reduce stress and anxiety which is often a trigger for illness. And you never know – you might end up getting more done!
Before you go away is a great time to see your homoeopath.
A full consultation will result in you being prescribed your own constitutional remedy which can help boost your immune system and keep you strong and well in unfamiliar surroundings. You can also get advice about first-aid remedies which may be useful to help speed up your recovery from anything that does trouble you while you are away…. bites, tummy bugs, over-exposure to the sun, and so on. Remedies can also be invaluable to keep you well during the journey and to adjust to a new time zone more quickly. Pack Arsenicum 30 for food poisoning, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Use natural insect repellents, such as citronella or neem (a few drops of the oil, added to your favourite body cream, should do the trick). Avoid Deet at all costs. Deet (Diethyl toluidine) is a highly toxic ingredient in Mosquito repellents which, while great at repelling insects, can be very harmful to us humans. For a citronella spritz, get an empty bottle and fill either with oil or purified water, a teaspoon of alcohol and quite a few drops of citronella. You can also use it in candles to repel mosquitoes from your barbeques at night! Also Lavender Essential Oil can be beneficial for bites and stings can be used neat on the skin. Put a few drops on a tissue to help calm down and protect from airborne germs when flying. Citronella, Lavender and Neem insect Repellent are available at The Vale Practice.
If you’re going long haul, and you suffer from a bad back or stiff neck it is a good idea to see your osteopath or massage therapist beforehand. Not only will they ease the muscles to help prevent spasms or stiffness during the flight, but they can also give you some great tips for exercises you can do on the plane so when you arrive at your destination your body will be in a better state.
Herbal Medicine – Natasja Prinsloo is offering 20 minute free Herbal Medicine Consultation every Thursday afternoon for the month of August.

JUNE 2016 NEWSLETTER
Here’s what one of our Massage Therapist had to say:A Father is someone you look upto no matter how tall you grow….
Most men has an attitude of “if it’s not broken don’t fix it” luckily the attitude towards men’s health as a whole seems to be shifting, whilst for some men it is still difficult to admit they need help whether it is physical or emotional! However, when a man asks for physical or emotional help, it results in healthier environment for him, his partner and his family.
“My dad was 94 when he passed away two years ago. He survived the Second World War and a Russian Labour Camp in Siberia for two years. He lost a lot of his family in that time and had to come to the UK as a war refugee where he gratefully accepted work as a coal miner…for 35 years. I was always so proud of his strength and resilience and I can only hope to follow lightly in his footsteps of integrity.
The day I brought massage into his life was the first day he had ever encountered such a treatment. He was 84 years old at that time. Gosh did he complain, according to him I was damaging every last muscle in his body. All those years of PTSD…hard stressed muscles that had set, along with emotions.
My Dad didn’t release those emotions…at least not publicly. In those days men didn’t cry…but after my first session, he was quiet for a few days. He neither said he liked it nor hated it….but when I offered my treatment again…he pretty much jumped into my hands”.
I can only feel thanks that I was able to offer such a gift even in his later years. Massage is a universal language of the hands. It can touch all age groups, all walks of life.
Why not give a gift of Health this Father’s Day you can choose from the variety of treatments whether it is Osteopathy, Massage, Nutrition or Acupuncture.

Herbs are also a wonderful adjunct – or complementary treatment – to support a person and nurture their body when undergoing harsh treatments such chemotherapy”.
We can all benefit from using and incorporating herbs in to our lives as each one of us at some point run out of steam, feel stressed or may be struck with illness and, let’s face it, most of us have an area of “weakness” within our body that can do with some “strengthening”. “The greatest weapon against STRESS is our ability to choose one thought over another”
~ William James
As we all know stress is a disease of the 21st Century, we are all surrounded by stress whether it is a family problems, job problems, meeting deadlines, and financial difficulties. Stress affects the whole person, physically, mentally and emotionally. This is why holistic therapies are such a powerful weapon against the effects of stress as they work on all levels to try and bring you back into balance, body, mind and spirit.
Ways to combat stress the holistic way…..
- Massage (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/massage/deep-tissue-massage/) is a very powerful tool against stress. It tunes you back into your body and away from all the ‘noise’ and activity in your head. Imagine an hour of complete relaxation where the space and time is yours to switch off the nervous system and totally re-balance. Massage (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/massage/deep-tissue-massage/) and Reflexology (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/massage/reflexology/) changes a day. It acts fast in achieving deep relaxation. Just reminding yourself how good this calm and peaceful place feels is tonic enough, and helps you sleep.
- Aromatherapy massage (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/massage/aromatherapy/) is particularly beneficial, not just because the oils work on an emotional level, but also because by burning the same oils in your house afterwards, or using them regularly in baths or massage oils, you can help trigger the memory of that deep relaxation state you achieve during a massage (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/massage/aromatherapy/) . The Vale Practice’s relaxation mixture, suitably named “Knock out Blend”, combines Ylang Ylang, Lavender and Chamomile for a truly blissful scent.
- The physical symptoms of stress – neck pain, headaches, lower back pain, jaw ache from teeth grinding, trembling, headaches, migraines, nervous tics etc. – can all be relieved by Osteopathy (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/body/osteopathy/). Cranial Osteopathy (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/body/cranial-osteopathy/) is also very powerful, working on an energetic level to realign your body. As with massage, the more you remind your body what wellness feels like, the easier it will be to identify when you have moved away from that state – and why!
- Hypnotherapy (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/mind/hypnotherapy/) has proved to be extremely effective in helping to eliminate negative behaviour patterns that might be caused by stress. ‘Each client is helped to explore their own stressors and develop a coping strategy that will carry them through whatever challenge comes their way. Helpful positive suggestions boost confidence and increase belief that they can recognize and depend on the power within themselves.’
- Herbal Medicine (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/body/medicinal-herbalism/) is often balancing in its effect, helping the body to return from an imbalanced state, there is a plethora of ways in which herbal medicine can help and support a person affected by stress, what needs to be established first is how stress is affecting you. Are you suffering from high blood pressure due to stress? Or maybe it affects your sleep? Once this is established an herbalist can put together a remedy specific to your needs.
Don’t bottle up your feelings when under pressure. Try to keep the lines of communication open with friends and family. If you need more objective, nonjudgmental advice, Counselling (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/mind/counselling/) can help by offering support during times of crisis and transition. By helping you to gain awareness into your reactions to life’s stresses, you can then start to spot and avoid unhelpful patterns of thought and behaviour.

FEBRUARY 2016 NEWSLETTER

Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in….
The Vale Practice is offering a 10% discount on all massages for the month of February:
Deep Tissue Massage – penetrates into the deeper layers of muscle to release chronic patterns of tension in the body and is excellent for people who train regularly.
Sports Massage – is perfect for people who enjoy a deeper form of massage leaving the body feeling like it has had a fully body workout.
Aromatherapy Massage – uses pure oils extracted from the seeds, roots, flowers or leaves of fragrant plants (essential oils). A specialised massage technique which relieves tension, drain lymph fluid and improves circulation, rejuvenating the body and promoting balanced good health.
Pregnancy Massage – reduces stress and promotes relaxation. It increases the flow of blood and lymph around the body and can help with muscle and joint pain such as back ache and cramps.
Reflexology – Reflexology is a massage system based on working on reflex points of the feet, activating the body’s own healing mechanisms, improving circulation, increasing the removal of wastes and toxins and induces a state of deep relaxation.
Reflexology & Massage Combination – Massage and reflexology go hand in hand. Massage of course has a systemic effect, showering the body with relaxation, homeostasis and overall stress reduction. Massage also offers physical benefits, helping to reduce muscle tension and pain created by repetitive strain or general physical overload.
Reflexology has more of a systemic than physical effect. Yes, your feet will feel wonderful and light after a session but the ‘inner’ effects are far greater than we may realise. Reflexologyworks with a very powerful effect on the nervous, lymphatic and endocrine systems and the therapy allows the internal organs find a place of equilibrium so that great healing can begin to take place.
Indian Head Massage – is based on the traditional Ayurvedic principles of balancing energy, this stimulating massage of the head, neck, shoulders and face using specific massage strokes and pressure points releases tension and restores energy levels.
Holistic Massage – maintains our general health and fitness, compliments traditional medicine in the treatment of specific conditions and symptoms, and offers relaxation.

JANUARY 2016 NEWSLETTER
Want a fresh start this New Year? The Vale Practice gives you practical tips and suggestions to help those resolutions stick this time.
Begin at the Beginning…
‘Change is about breaking the habit of your old self and reinventing a new self.’ Dr Joe Dispenza
According to Lyndall Cowie, hypnotherapist at The Vale Practice, it’s our beliefs and thinking which usually keep us stuck in old patterns and habits, and so that is where she starts with her clients. By discussing their core beliefs around an issue and helping them change the focus of their thoughts she helps clients understand how deeply unconscious behaviour patterns have become. She states that ‘if one is conscious about their behaviour, they usually would not choose it.’ By changing behaviour from an unconscious action to a conscious one, people can make better choices and choose a different outcome.
It’s not easy to unlearn old habits of a lifetime, and they’re not going to change overnight. So recognise that what you’re undertaking may at times be difficult, and that you may experience setbacks or come across obstacles along your way. But with increased awareness you can choose how best to deal with these, in order to overcome them and continue to make positives changes to your life.

DECEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER
“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” Norman Vincent Peale.
Colds and flu
Listen to your body. Look out for a white coating on your tongue which can often be a sign a cold is coming. On first sight start taking immune boosting action to combat the effects: take homeopathic remedies (an herbalist or homeopath can prescribe a constitutional medication to suit your medical profile exactly), Echinacea supplements, eat Shitake mushrooms, sip hot drinks throughout the day, especially flower tea and REST. Hot baths (Pink Himalayan bath salts which are known for detoxifying properties and infused with 84 minerals – is available at the practice) and inhalations are also an excellent way to warm up and help detox your system. Pain and pressure of blocked sinuses can be alleviated by a visit to a good cranial osteopath, and a lymphatic massage can help get the lymph system moving and help your body process and release toxins. And after any cold or flu be sure to change your toothbrush as these can harbour the virus and prolong the illness.
Lack of sleep can leave the body more vulnerable to infection, so try to get as many zzz’s as possible. As much as we love our Sunday morning lie-in’s, going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, even on weekends, will help you get the most restorative sleep. Turn the lights down and avoid TV’s, computers or smart phones an hour before you go to bed to create a bedtime routine conducive to sleep. This will also leave you time to relax by reading, listening to soft music or soaking in a warm bath. If you’re still having problems falling or staying asleep acupuncture and reflexology have both been shown to have beneficial effects on improving sleep.

NOVEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER
“Adopting a right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one” Hans Selge
A problem with stress is that for many years it will cause symptoms not thought serious enough for orthodox investigation. Also, as the symptoms of stress are so varied and unspecific, there is no ‘target’ for an orthodox drug.
Complementary therapies generally aim to restore the patient’s system to a state of balance, but there is much that the individual can do to improve their own health simply by adjusting their lifestyles.
How to minimize the effects of stress:
– Avoid stimulants such as caffeinated drinks (caffeine inhibits the breakdown of adrenaline), and replace with calming herbal teas such as chamomile, and lemon balm. Dandelion coffee can make a pleasant coffee substitute which is also beneficial for the liver.
– Moderate alcohol (further depletes immune function, vitamin C, lowers vitality)
– Supplement with vitamin C, magnesium and B complex
– Adopt relaxation techniques such as yoga, Tai chi, breathing exercises, meditation
– Do whatever makes you feel relaxed – painting, walking, gardening, listening to music, or try hypnotherapy to release more deep-seated tensions.
– Book yourself regular (once monthly, if possible), therapeutic treatments such as massage orreflexology
– Seek help for ongoing relationship problems. Couples counselling can help people to manage their behavior and communicate more effectively
Whether it’s the physical, emotional or financial drain on personal resources, for many, Christmas is the most stressful time of the year, especially for women who are often expected to take on the role of caterer, present buyer, child pacifier and family peace-maker on top of all the usual everyday responsibilities.
Under normal circumstances, stress often leads to an increase in drinking, smoking and ‘comfort’ eating. All of these activities, around Christmas, are intensified – and justified – by a constant round of office parties, socialising and festivities. The added physical stress, combined with the emotional pressures quite often means that many women reach their own personal tipping point around 25th December.
Hypnotherapy can help by relaxing the body, calming the mind and helping the individual tap into their own inner resources. Each client is helped to explore their own ‘stressors’ and develop a coping strategy that will carry them through whatever challenge comes their way. Helpful positive suggestions boost confidence and increase belief that they can recognise and depend on the power within themselves.

STAYING HEALTHY THIS WINTER WITH THE VALE PRACTICE
With the days getting shorter and darkness setting in earlier as we approach winter, it’s not uncommon to feel under par or a bit down. The changes in the weather and the onset of colder days and nights can have a multitude of effects on our minds and bodies.
The old wives tale that changing weather can be felt in the bones may no longer be such a tall tale. Research has shown changes in atmospheric pressure can affect joint health which can lead to joint pain, and cold weather can negatively affect our circulation causing pain, restriction in joints and muscle fatigue. Our daily postures can change as the weather starts to cool. We might hunch our shoulders and tense our jaws, which can lead to joint and muscle pain as we try to compensate for our altered postures and gait. These changes can also highlight old injuries which had seemingly been long resolved.
Osteopathy can help address stubborn, unresolved areas highlighted by the cold. Our Osteopath Caroline Reeves suggests to allow yourself warming-up time in the mornings by walking to help keep the body agile and counteract the cold by raising your circulation. Be sure not to burrow your hands deep into your pockets, rather let your arms swing freely, allowing full movement in your shoulders and upper body. In the evenings settle down and allow yourself to adjust by enjoying a hot bath with Epsom salts, rich in magnesium to support the muscles and joints.
Acupuncture can help boost the immune system and your energy levels. If you’ve been feeling run-down and lethargic due to stress, recurring infections or excessive use of antibiotics all of this contributes to lower our resistance to disease. Regular acupuncture sessions support and strengthen the immune system and increases the white blood cells in the body to fight the infection.
Is there a new-born in the family?
iIf you or a loved one has recently given birth this is a must. Book in for a mother and baby check ensuring healthy function after what can sometimes be a difficult start. If you have any specific concerns please book in for a free 15 min consult or a full osteopathy mother and baby consultation at £75.00.
A mother and baby post-natal check and treatment by an experienced paediatric osteopathcan help settle both mother and baby, and allow each to find their health quickly and safely. A good investment for the future!

SEPTEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER
The difference between school and life?
In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test.
In life, you’re given a test that teaches a lesson ~ Tom Bodett
It’s no surprise people find themselves feeling a bit flat after the summer: a time they’ve filled with exciting and varied activities, catching up with friends and family, soaking up the sunshine and packing as much into a day as possible. But as the summer comes to an end and we pack away our summer clothes, we notice the days getting colder and a little shorter. Work related stress begins to creep back in, and as school starts again we can quickly begin to feel overwhelmed, as if our holiday was a distant memory. But as post-holiday blues set in, it’s worth remembering there are a few positive things you can do to help you and your family through the post-summer fall-out.
Nutrition:
Eating high protein and/or high carbohydrate meals can become the norm while on holiday: cheese at the end of every meal in France, rich late night dinners in Spain, etc. Now that you’re home reintroducing healthier, energy giving foods, such as homemade soups and colourful salads, will invigorate you for the colder months ahead. A nutritionist can suggest healthy options that are specifically right for your body and help you get the best out of your diet. They can also help you focus on the areas you are lacking as well as any intolerances that may be affecting your health.
Acupuncture:
Insomnia can kick in after holidays as we force ourselves to change from holiday lie-ins to normal waking hours, a bit like a holiday jet lag effect. This can lead to increased fatigue levels and irritability during the day. Re-establishing a normal meal and bedtime routine a week before school starts by going to bed 10-15 minutes earlier each night will mean it’s not such a shock to the system the first week back. If fatigue and insomnia persist, acupuncture has a proven track record of helping to improve sleep patterns.
Osteopathy:
Our autonomic nervous system (ANS), is responsible for unconscious control and balance of bodily functions such as breathing, heart function, digestion and the stress response. This delicate nervous system balance can be altered after holidays with back to school/work worries leading to increased stress levels. Looking after yourself and getting back into a healthier routine will not only help to rebalance the ANS, but help to alleviate feelings of sadness which may accompany post-holiday-fallout. Neuroscientific studies show that meditation helps calm the sympathetic nervous system helping you to balance and settle your nervous system. Osteopathy also works on the body’s physical manifestations of stress helping to rebalance this system too.

Traces is a performance from 7fingers Production Company based in Canada. It is an international touring circus performance who has performed repeatedly at Saddlers Wells in June. The Vale Practice Osteopaths Daniel (The Vale Practice Clinical Director) and Becca lead by Amberin (The Vale Practice Founder and Director) were their official London support team. Providing treatment and advice to ensure each performance went well and their bodies were optimised to deliver an amazing performance each night. Which we are happy to say they did!We were very privileged to have been asked to be part of this amazing experience and the show was absolutely electrifying! Well done to both Cast and Crew!Check out photos on our events galleryAcupunctureThe Vale Practice is now offering Cosmetic Acupuncture for facial rejuvenation, a natural alternative to skin peels, chemical fillers and Botox. Cosmetic acupuncture works differently in that it has a cumulative effect over a course of treatments, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in the face and neck more strongly each successive treatment, which keeps the skin buoyant and vibrant. Noticeable effects are evident from the first session. With the occasional top-up treatment, it is considerably more cost effective and lasts long into the future. Replenished skin lasts longer with all round sense of health Cosmetic acupuncture involves some full body treatment as well, with the understanding that for long term effects we must achieve more than just appear younger, but to feel and become younger – refreshed, full of energy, enlivened, vibrant. Not making just the skin glow but the spirit shine too – In Chinese medicine our ‘Shen’ 神 or spirit is discernible through the eyes. After acupuncture treatment our eyes shine more brightly – the Shen, our sense of self, is clear, clean and bright, and we commonly feel energised and abundant. By treating you as a whole whilst also treating your complexion, you do in some ways literally grow younger, as healthier cells live longer and the degenerative process slows, halts and even reverses in several ways. By resolving the habitual wrinkling of the face that develops from repetitive emotions (both positive and negative), the face actually becomes younger, firmer and richer; with better blood supply too.Nutrition Everybody can benefit from Nutritional Therapy! Eating well makes us feel great and energised and makes us look good too. A nutritional therapy programme is tailor made for each individual client and is a holistic complementary therapy based on the most recent scientific research and clinical work. A nutritional consultation and regular follow ups can help each one of us to discover our individual nutritional needs and by then fulfilling these needs we can experience the benefits of optimum physical and mental wellbeing. Our nutritional needs are influenced by our genetic makeup, our environment and our lifestyle. These needs can vary with time and with differing environmental and lifestyle demands. Eating the right foods for you is important and has incredible health giving effects. Eating should be an enjoyable and satisfying experience. JULY 2015 NEWSLETTER
Stress is the trash of modern life – we all generate it but if you don’t dispose of it properly,
it will pile up and overtake your life ~ Terri Guillemets
HOLISTIC APPROACH TO DENTISTRY-
Acupuncture – Stress can reduce the body immunity leading to Gingivitis and periodontitis. Tooth decay is reported in much stressed patients especially women. Stress is a major factor in teeth grinding and clinching, during sleep; in some cases it could occur during the day too. It is an excellent method to reduce stress levels by rebalancing the body’s own energies. Acupuncture has a profound effect on our emotional health. It can help to release emotions caused by trauma and shock, physical or emotional & helps to boost immune levels and is used efficiently to relax the muscles in the region of the TMJ joint, the face, the neck, head, shoulders and upper back. This will relax spasm of the TMJ and reduce grinding and clenching of the teeth. Acupuncture can help to rebalance the flow of energy in the face, through the gums and jaws, thereby soothing the pain and trauma caused by dental procedures.
Hypnotherapy – Unfortunately, despite our best intentions, it is a fact that some people are still scared or phobic of the dentist and dental surgeries. This fear can be so intense that it can prevent you from visiting your dental practice more regularly. Ultimately, this can lead to the neglect of necessary dental works which can make things worse in the long run.
By applying relaxation and psychotherapeutic techniques, together with hypnosis, hypnotherapy (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/mind/hypnotherapy/) can have powerful results in helping you to becoming more comfortable with your dental visit. These techniques can help dental issues such as anxiety, phobias, tooth grinding/bruxism, denture intolerance and gagging. Pain relief is also a component of dental hypnotherapy. (http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/treatments/mind/hypnotherapy/)
Our Hypnotherapist, Lyndall Cowie, will give you a call to answer any questions you may have in advance of booking your session.
Osteopathy – The importance of the relationship between cranial osteopathy and dentistry cannot be overstated. Conditions affecting the mouth and teeth have a very direct effect on the rest of the body, and a treatment programme can be seriously impeded if these conditions are ignored.
The face is a complex bony structure composed of a number of different bones. Some of these bones are very delicate, and they are intricately linked together in a very complex way. Trauma to the face may restrict the normal movement between the bones, and can have very wide reaching effects in the whole body. One of the most common causes of trauma is dental treatment. Osteopathic techniques used to treat strains within the face are very gentle.

‘As full of spirit as the month of May, and as gorgeous as the sun in Midsummer’ William Shakespeare
Combat Allergies A Natural Way-
Acupuncture– Allergies are becoming more and more common. People can be allergic to many different kinds of substances, such as pollen, gluten, dust and dust mites, food additives, many kinds of foods such as nuts and wheat, insect bites and stings, detergents, medications and many more.
What happens in the body is, that the immune system has been harmed in some way, so that our body cannot identify the substance it reacts to properly. Something that is actually relatively harmless to the human body causes us to have a reaction that is out of proportion. This reaction causes a lot more damage to the body, than the substance that started it. This means that the immune system is “on edge” and “over-reactive”.
With acupuncture, the first step is to calm down this over-reaction quickly, and then the next step is to try to find out, what has harmed the immune system, and to rebalance and harmonise this. Acupuncture is a great tool to treat allergies, as it directly rebalances and cleanses the body’s own energies, without adding any more “foreign” substances that could cause more allergic reactions.

Nutrition– Allergies or allergic reactions are reactions in the body due to exposure to airborne particles, food, dusts, pollen and other substances. Everyone can benefit from Nutritional Therapy! Eating well makes us feel great and energised and makes us look good too. A nutritional therapy programme is tailor made for each individual client andis a holistic complementary therapy based on the most recent scientific research and clinical work.

Cranial Osteopathy– Spring and summer is often a time of increased suffering for people with airborne allergy problems, increased levels of pollen and air pollution can cause irritation and congestion of the eyes, nose and sinuses. Cranial Osteopathy can be valuable in easing these symptoms, especially the build-up of sinus congestion. Cranial Osteopathy is a hands on manual therapy using very gentle pressure, massage and movements to release restriction between craniofacial bones and soft tissues. Benefits of this can be improved venous and lymphatic drainage from the sinuses as well as the whole ears, nose and throat region, using this approach avoids the side effects of decongestant medications.

Massage –
Swedish massage – Swedish massage techniques are well-reputed for encouraging relaxation. These effects reduce the load on immune system, rendering it more capable of optimum functioning.
Aromatherapy – While specific requirements must be met to safety practice with essential oils. Using aromatherapy to strengthen immunity or reduce allergic symptoms can be of enormous therapeutic benefit.

‘Wellness is a proactive approach to our Physical, Emotional, Social and Mental Health’
Mentally we are all affected by the situations and stress of life in general that surround us, some are feeling it more than they perhaps realise. If the following symptoms are becoming increasingly common to you, it’s time to take action: insomnia, depression, anxiety, feeling foggy-headed, dizziness, nausea, feeling drained of energy, or suffering from persistent bacterial and viral infections. At the Vale Practice, we’d prefer to step in at the prevention stage, although many of our therapies – especially acupuncture, osteopathy and homoeopathy – can form a vital part of any cure.
Take a look at what our Team have to offer here…
Vale Practice recommends stepping off the relentless treadmill of life, juggling family, career and mortgage-payments – even if only for a minute – and taking stock. ‘Take a look at your life, and be kind to yourself.
‘We are what we eat,’ Caffeine, sugar and fats play havoc on our system; they speed us up, dry us out and weigh us down. So think about what you’re eating. If you feel you need to, then go and get a food sensitivity test, and talk to an experienced nutritionist. You may find that some foods are not being processed effectively by your system, leading to sluggishness mentally and physically.’ Wheat, yeast, dairy and sugar are the usual culprits. If you would like to find out more about Nutrition then take a look here…
We all know that massage feels great. It is a calming, restorative and pain relieving experience. However, massage is much more than this. Regular massage can help strengthen your immune system, and increase levels of endorphins and serotonin in the brain (which is implicated in depression and may be part of why many people feel a bit “blue” during winter).
While massage has many fast acting benefits, these sorts of benefits require regular massage for a sustained effect. How often is regular? That depends on what you are trying to achieve and how much help your body needs.

JANUARY 2015 NEWSLETTER
“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.”
MASSAGE DURING WINTER:
During the winter months, the temperature drop can make our bodies more vulnerable to colds and flu, particularly due to moisture and decreased circulation.
Massage in winter can also have a major psychological effect: a large percentage of the population is affected by SAD (seasonal affective disorder): days are darker, we receive less sunlight, and therefore less essential Vitamin D. This can negatively affect mood, bringing on symptoms that can be similar to those of depression. Research has shown that massage can lift the mood, by releasing the endorphins and the serotonin that are our body’s “feel good chemicals.”
Bea Erler Aromatherapist at The Vale Practice has a wealth of experience to share and recommends essential oils to help combat the January blues and feelings of exhaustion as the festivities draw to a close. A few drops of the oils can be burnt in an oil burner or put in the bath. Basil is great for when your brain is so exhausted it just isn’t functioning anymore! Or for tiredness especially in the head Rosemary is great. Other generally uplifting oils to soothe away the January blues that she likes to use are: Neroli, Sweet Orange, Mandarin, Rose and Ylang Ylang.

PILATES FOR THE NEW YEAR:
Zoë is a member of our Vale Practice team, and specialises in teaching rehabilitative Pilates. Often recommended alongside osteopathic treatment, massage or acupuncture, Pilates can increase resilience in particular muscle groups and address inefficient movement patterns that are often a major factor in back and neck pain, or recurring injury. Taught in this detailed, individualised and mindful way, Pilates looks at the body as a whole, and can help with a range of conditions, from back, shoulder or knee problems, through to post-natal recovery.
Even if you have experience of Pilates (e.g. in a group setting), you may be surprised at how much you can learn from a one-to-one session, which you can then apply to your usual exercise and day-to-day activities.
